Becoming the Night
for orchestra
(1994)
The primary inspiration for this music is the evening sky. The gradually moving colors and the glowing light that occurs during and shortly after sunset have always inspired me, not only because they are beautiful, but also because they consistently and imperceptibly slip away into darkness. Eventually, during one particularly glowing sunset, I was moved enough to write the short poem Becoming the Night. The central image is one of drifting through the glowing colors of sunset and out into the deep peaceful emptiness of space. Several years later, that poem itself became an inspiration for this piece of music. One could therefore view this piece as a flight of my imagination into a world of twilight.
