Shining Through Cracks

This piece, though conceived as “absolute music” expresses a wide variety of moods and textures. The strings often play cloudy unmetered textures while the piano provides harmonic color for the oboe soloist. As the piece progresses, there are also places with quick rhythmic dialogues between all the players. Because the oboe often bends pitches, almost like "blue notes", its color not only "shines" through the cloudy textures of the strings, it also plays "in the cracks" between traditional pitches.
