Six Preludes

for solo piano
(1992)

Holly Roadfeldt can be heard performing two of the preludes at these links:
Prelude #2
Prelude #6

One of my intentions in writing these preludes was to explore various coloristic, emotional, and dramatic possibilities for the piano. Another was to isolate various techniques of piano playing. With respect to these intentions, it may have been appropriate to call these pieces "studies" instead of "preludes". However, the development of technique was not my ultimate goal. Instead, I would like both listeners and players to be in tune with the more poetic side of music making. Approached from this perspective, I hope that these preludes will be heard as short explorations into various facets of the human spirit.

These pieces may be played separately or in groups consisting of less than the entire set.
(performance time for all six preludes ca. 18 minutes)
